Heritage and History

Bursting with History.

Ramsey is bursting with history and most heritage attractions can be seen by simply taking a stroll around the town. Remains of the Abbey, once one of the most important in England, can be seen at the Gatehouse and at Thomas a Becket church on the picturesque Abbey Green. Oliver Cromwell’s uncle had a part to play in the history of the town and you can find his grave stone in the church yard. The house that Cromwell built, from abbey stone left up for grabs after the dissolution of the monasteries, is a truly impressive sight.

Still staying within Ramsey’s Heritage Hub, you can immerse yourself in times gone by at the museum, visit the beautiful walled garden and cross the road to see the fascinating and unique Mortuary Chapels.

Wartime history is also very much alive in Ramsey with the 1940s Camp, the Pathfinder Memorial in the next village and the chilling tale of a German spy captured in Ramsey, who was the last man to be executed at the Tower of London .
